Saxophone (Nov-2003)
as long as I know Bangkok ... great live music and -if your lucky- some brilliant jam sessions.
 So, what's long you ask? Long is approximately twenty years - 18 by the time of this writing, to be precise. Okay, 18 years ago I didn't know the Saxophone, but approx. 17 years ago I went there first time.
Great! I liked the place from the first moment. It could be anywhere. It reminds me a little on an old barn. The walls are filled with trophies, music instruments, bottles, signs, posters, curtains. Now they have exhibitions of art work. Last time I went there some really kinda fancy-traditional Loi-Kratong Paintings. Loi Kratong always occures in November and is a Thai festival where everybody goes to some water place, like a lake, the sea (maybe a bit rough) or any aritficial pool of water to float ("loi") their basket ("kratong"). The basket is decorated with flowers, inscents, candles and YOUR WISH. So, you see, not long ago I went to the Sax.
Well, at the moment I recommend Thursdays. Okay, that's my personal taste. Let's start right from the beginning. There's live music every day from about 8:30 or 9 pm onwards. Various bands - changing day by day. The theme is mainly blues and jazz - even though hard rocketiers should get some out of it as well and -now, back to Thursdays- Salsa/Samba-Lovers as well. Really great music of a maybe 6 person band, well equipped, well levelled. People were dancing (I mean almost everybody was moving, grooving), habbyly drifting. They had difficulties to have the band stop at 2 am (which -shame!- is the official and enforced closing time).
The place is built on 2 storeys, so the ones who like it more quiet and maybe even more private can sit upstairs. Downstairs where the band plays is a lower bar, so you can place yourself right in front of the musicians and have your drink. Prices are rather high (110 Baht for a beer, cocktails at about 150 Baht) but definitely worth the money. I prefer th main bar to hang out ... to keep some distance:)
Well, whenever you feel like good live music ... that's the place to be. It's right at victory monument / corner Payathai Road. Open every day from about 8 pm. Serving food, drinks and great music. And once they close and you come out ... have a noodle soup right in front of it - just like in the old days. |
